Day 458

Friday, March 6, 2020 -

I have been collecting the names for Jesus in the Scriptures. I’m certain my list is not complete, but the exercise reveals much of the person, character, attributes, and purpose of Jesus, and His relationship to us.

First and foremost, Jesus is the Christ (Matt. 16:16), the Messiah (John 1:41), the Holy One of God (Luke 4:34), the One (Luke 3:16), and the Expected One (Luke 7:19-20). He was born the Child (Luke 2:40), Jesus of Nazareth (Luke 4:34), the Son of God (John 1:36), His only begotten Son (John 3:16), His anointed (Psalm 2:2), the Righteous One (Acts 7:52), the Holy One of God (John 6:69), He Who comes from above (John 3:31), Who is the Salvation of God (Luke 3:6). The Jews said He was making Himself out to be God (John 10:33), but in fact, Jesus called Himself “the Lord your God” (Luke 4:12).

Yet He was also known as the Son of David (Luke 20:41) and Jesus called Himself the Son of Man (Luke 6:5), or simply the Son (John 5:19), and the Living One (Luke 24:5). Pilate called Him only the Man (John 19:5), others a great prophet (Luke 17:16), and still others, Lord (Luke 5:12), Master (Luke 5:5). Teacher (john 8:4), Rabbi (John 3:7), Jesus Christ the Nazarene (Acts 4:10), King of Israel (John 1:49), a prophet (John 4:19), King of the Jews (John 18:33), Messiah the Prince (Daniel 9:25), and the Holy and Righteous One (Acts 3:14).

In fact, Jesus the Nazarene (John 19:19) is the Sunrise from on high (Luke 1:78), the Light of Revelation (Luke 2:32), our Bridegroom (Luke 5:34-35), the Lord of the Sabbath (Luke 6:5), the Word who was from the beginning (John 1:1), Immanuel (Matthew 1:23), the Prince of Life (Acts 3:15), God’s Prince (Acts 5:31), the Light (John 12:35-36), the Cornerstone (Acts 4:11; Ps. 118:22), God with us (Matthew 1:23), the Light from Heaven (Acts 9:3), Judge (Acts 10:42), the Righteous Branch (Jer. 23:5), the Justifier (Rom. 3:26), the Rock (Matthew 16:18), our Mediator (I Tim. 2:5), Redeemer (Ps. 19:14), Wonderful (Is. 9:6), Counselor (Is. 9:6), Mighty (Is. 9:6), Eternal Father (Is. 9:6), Prince of Peace (Is. 9:6), His Servant (Acts 3:26), the Light of the World (John 8:12), Living Bread (John 6:51), the Good Shepherd (John 10: 11, 14), Bread of Life (John 6:35, 48), the Door of the sheep (John 10:7-8), and the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).

What a wonderful and meaningful exercise this has been for me. I am glad for this opportunity to share it with you. I doubt it is in any way complete. If you f some I’ve missed, please post them!
